Chapter 24

Lifeline

"Port Charles Police Departmen, Sargeant Collins speaking," a voice answers the phone.

"Hello, my I please speak with Commisioner Scorpio?" Skye asks politely, nervously fidgeting with the cord on the pay phone.

"Hes in a meeting right now. May I take a message?" Sargeant Collins asks.

"Yes, please. Tell him Skye Quartermaine called. He has my number."

"Will do, miss. Goodbye."

"Bye," Skye says, hanging up the phone. When she returns to Jaxs room, teh doctor has left and Jax is sitting propped up on several pillows.

"Welcome back," he says, smiling at her. She smiles back and goes to plug the battery charger into her cell phone.

"What did the doctor say?" she questions.

"I should be able to go home in a couple days," he says, smiling at her. "Providing, of course, that I have a full-time caretaker." Skye rolls her eyes, but cant stop the smile from spreading across her face. Jax smiles too, but it quickly fades as he looks at Skye. "You look exhausted," he says. "Why dont you go home and get some rest?" Skye firmly shakes her head. "Then at least go down and get something to eat." At this comment, Skye realizes just how hungry she is. However, she hesitates, not wanting to miss the call from Mac or leave Jax alone. They are interrupted by a knock at the door. Skye turns to see Carly standing in the doorway and rolls her eyes.

"On second thought, that breakfast does sound good," she says. Standing up, she gives Jax a light kiss on the cheek. "Ill be back soon." She smiles poiltely at Carly as she passes her on her way out and heads for an elevator to take her downstairs.

Alexis, meanwhile, sits staring out the window of her penthouse. She has this feeling that Skye had been right the night before, that the accident was no accident at all, and she didnt know what to do to stop it. She had called the police station, since Mac had not called her, but he was in a meeting and hadnt been able to come out to speak with her.

"Whats the matter Alexis?" Kristina asks, breaking into her thoughts.

"Im worried about what happpened," she says. "I think Skye was right and something more than what meets the eye is going on here. I just wish I knew what," she says, burying her face in her hands. She races her face slowly as her comment is met by silence.

"Kristina? You ok? Youre not offering me any helpful advice or anything," she says.

"Hahaha," Kristina replies.

"I just wish there was something I could do," Alexis says, sighing.

"Youll think of something," Kristina says, trying to encourage her sister.

"I hope so," Alexis replies doubtfully. "Im worried about what will happen if nothing is done."

Skye takes a bite of the Belgian waffle she had ordered in the small restaurant on the first floor of the hospital. She hadnt realized until now just how hungry she had been. She was like that; when she was worried about something, she tended to forget about everything else, including food. Shes about to take a bite when she feels a hand on her shoulder. Immediately tensing her whole body, Skye puts down the fork slowly and turns her head. Her heart beating quickly, she forces herself to see who the person standing above her is. Her pulse slows as she looks up at AJ.

"AJ, you scared me to death!" she exclaims quietly.

"Sorry," he says. "Why are you so uptight? Jax is going to be alright, isnt he?" Skye had called AJ the night before. She had been terrified and needed somebody to talk to.

"Yeah, hell be alright," she says. "If he isnt killed," she thinks to heself.

"Can I join you?" AJ asks. Skye smiles, grateful for the company.

"Of course," she says.

"You know, we were really worried about you when we heard that you had been hit, Skye," AJ says. "Everyone was, even Monica." Skye stares at him, puzzled.

"It was Jax that was hit, not me," she says, confused.

"No, Skye, not last night, the night before," AJ says.

"Ah," Skye says. Her own accident hadnt even crossed her mind, she had been so worried about Jax. "It was no big deal," she says.

"Yes it was," AJ counters. Skye waves her hand, as if dismissing the issue. Skye glances at a clock on the wall and realizes she has been gone for almost an hour.

"AJ, I want to get back to Jax," she says. AJ nods.

"Call me if you need anything," he says. "Courtney and I will come by later on." Skye nods and gives her brother a hug. "I love you sis," he says.

"I love you too," Skye answers before gathering up her purse and hurrying back to the room. When she reaches the room she slows her pace and walks in quietly, smiling as she watches Jax sleeping. Quietly unplugging her phone from the charger, she steps outside the room and calls the police station yet again.

"PCPD, Sargaent Brink speaking," a deep voice says.

"Do you know if Commissioner Scorpio is out of his meeting yet?" Skye asks.

"Yes, maam, he is, Ill connect you to his line. Hold for one moment please."

"Mac Scorpio. How may I help you?"

"Hi, its Skye Quartermaine. I was wondering if you could give me any information on the suspect yet."

"Right now the only information I can give you is the name," Mac replies, sounding slightly distracted.

"Anything you can tell me is fine," Skye says, almost urgently.

"Ok. His name is Charles Johnson." At Macs words, Skye drops the phone and grabs onto a nearby wall to keep herself from collapsing.
