Sitting up slowly and leaning on her elbow, Skye turns her head slightly, looking down at Jax. Trying to keep the look on her face nonchalant, she raises her eyebrows at him, silently telling him to go on.
"I want you to know, Skye, that this is not your fault," he says quietly, staring back up at her. Skyes lips curl into a smile as she bends down and kisses him gently on the forehead. Although she had been avoiding it, she actually had been feeling incredibly guilty, because if he hadnt pushed her out of the way, he could have gotten out of the line of fire himself. Jax really did know her very well. However, she was pretty good at keeping secrets and lying when she had to.
"How did you know that was bothering me?" she asks, sitting back up and shifting lightly on the bed. Jax just smiles and takes her into his arms once again.
"Promise me, you wont blame yourself for this. That guy was probably drunk and he just didnt see us. And I dont regret for one moment what I did. I want you to understand that, Skye. Id do anything to protect you." Skye feels tears slowly welling up in her eyes at his compassion. How could she be so lucky to have found him? She was so glad she had decided to be honest with him, to open her heart and tell him how she really felt.
"I dont even know what to say to that, Jax, except the fact that you said that and mean it means the world to me. Nobody has ever said anything like that to me before, well, never said it and meant it anyway. This whole thing is just so amazing that its still hard for me to comprehend." Jax smiles at this side of Skye, a more sensitive one that she rarely allows herself to show.
"Why dont you go home and get some sleep, Skye. Its after midnight," Jax suggests. Skye shakes her head firmly.
"Boy, are you a hypocrite!" she exclaims teasingly. "I told you to go home when I was in the hospital and you refused. And now you want me to go home? No way, uh-uh, forget it, Mr. Jacks. Youre not getting rid of me that easily." Jax laughs.
"You really are something else, you know that?" he asks. Skye simply smiles and gets up from the bed, walking over to the window and looking outside. She turns around at the sound of Jaxs voice. "I wish it was last night in this time," he says, smiling over at her. Skye blushes lightly and smiles.
"So do I," she says, her thoughts flashing back to the previous night. It had just been so perfect. "You have to hurry up and get out of here," she says, indicating the hospital room. "So we can have another night like that." Jax laughs.
"Ill do my best," he says. "Did the doctor tell you how long I need to be here?" he asks Skye. "He didnt say a word about it to me." Skye shakes her head.
"No, he didnt," she says, walking over to the chair in the corner of the room. Dragging it over to the bed, she sits down by Jax. "But I hope its soon."
"Me too," he says, smiling at her. "But you do realize that means you will have to care of me."
"Oh really?" Skye asks, raising an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Oh definitely," Jax says with mock seriousness. "And I can be a very demanding patient. Like, for instance, youll have to be with me twenty four hours a day." Skyes gentle laughter fills the small hospital room.
"I dont think that will be a problem," she says, leaning over to kiss him lightly. A knock at the door causes her to lift her head.
"Can we come in?" Alexis asks. Jax smiles.
"Hi Alexis," he says. "Hi Kristina." The two women walk into the room and over to the bed.
"How are you feeling?" Kristina asks.
"Im okay," Jax promises. "Ill be just fine and Skyes already promised to wait on me hand and foot when I get to go home."
"I did not, you big baby," Skye shoots back, giggling. Alexis shoots Kristina a glance.
"Well, Im glad youre feeling better," she says. "You had us pretty worried there!"
"Ill be fine, no need to worry," Jax says. Alexis smiles.
"We better go and let you get some sleep," she says, kissing him lightly on the cheek. "Im glad youre ok."
"Thank you," Jax says, giving Kristina a light hug.
"Are you coming Skye?" Alexis questions.
"Actually, Im going to stay," Skye says.
"Are you sure you want to do that?" Kristina asks.
"Positive," Skye says firmly. Alexis nods, knowing that there is no way to change Skyes mind.
"Well be back tomorrow," she says. "Feel better Jax!" Jax nods and says goodbye.
"You need to get some rest," Skye says. "Try to go to sleep." Jax nods, his eyes already closing. Skye leans over and kisses him lightly on the cheek. Once she hears his steady breathing, indicating he is asleep, Skye gets up from her chair and walks to the window, staring outside. Perching on the small windowsill, Skye stares out at the city in front of her. She knew something had to be done, but she wasnt quite sure what. Sighing, she walks over and retrieves her purse from the chair, taking her cell phone from it. Slipping out of the room, Skye dials the police department.
"PCPD, how may I help you?" Mac answers the phone.
"Hi, its Skye Quartermaine. I was just wondering what the story is with the man driving the truck who hit Jax."
"Well, we have him here in custody," Mac says. "And were in the process of doing a criminal background check. If you like, you can come down to the station or leave me your phone number and Ill call you back when were done."
"Well, I cant come down right now. Let me leave you my number. If it turns out that I need to be there, Ill come later. But please call me as soon as you know," Skye says and give him the number to her cell phone. Walking back into the room, Skye shuts the door behind her and walks back over to the chair. She watches as Jax sleeps peacefully, a calm look on his face. She found it hard to believe she had ever questioned telling him how she felt. She was still quite frightened at the whole notion of having someone care for her so deeply, but the true happiness he brought to her life outweighed that fear. Reaching over, Skye gently strokes Jaxs cheek.
"I love you," she whispers, knowing he is asleep. "Im in love with you, Jax. Ive known for a long time now that I love you, but I know now that I am in love with you. This has never happened to me before, Ive never cared so much and so deeply for someone in my entire life. And Ill protect you Jax, just like you protect me." Skye wipes a tear from her eye as she sits back and waits impatiently for Mac to call her back.
