Chapter 20

Lifeline

The deep blaring of the truck horn jolts Jax and Skye from their thoughts. A look of sheer terror crossing his face, Jax pushes Skye out of the way. Trying desperately to catch her balance, Skye throws her arms out and latches onto a nearby car to steady herself. Wincing in pain as her elbow bangs hard against the cars window, she screams out for Jax, no longer able to see him. By now the truck has come to a screeching halt and the driver-side door is open. Ignoring the blood trickling down her elbow from the impact of hitting the window, Skye races around to the other side of the truck, needing to make sure Jax is alright. Her heart almost stops as she sees him lying on the cold ground on the other side of the truck, his eyes closed.

"HELP!" she shrieks at the top of her lungs, tears already streaming down her cheeks. "Somebody HELP!" Alexis and Kristina, who had been leaving the club, hear Skyes panicked screams and come running over.

"Oh my Gosh!" Alexis screams as she sees Jax lying on the ground. "Kristina, call an ambulance"

"I dont have my phone with me, " Kristina squeaks.

"I do," Skye says, fumbling in her purse to find the tiny phone. With trembling fingers she calls for an ambulance. As the three women sit surrounding Jax, waiting for the ambulance, Skyes tears multiply in number. Scooping up Jaxs left hand in hers, she prays that he will be alright. "You cant leave me, Jax, not now," she says through her tears. "Not now that we finally found each other." Not now that I love you. Skye surprises ever herself with that thought. Lying down on the ground next to him, Skye presses herself up against Jax, refusing to let go, the tears positively streaming down her face.

"Hell be ok, Skye," Alexis says reassuringly. "Hes breathing, hell be ok." Skye opens her mouth to respond but is cut off by the balring sirens of the ambulance. As two paramedics leap out and run to Jax, Skye squeezes his hand tightly.

"Dont you dare give up on me," she whispers. "I cant live without you." Skye watches, petrified, as the paramedics put Jax on a stretcher and load him into the ambulance. "Can I ride along?" she manages to choke out between her sobs.

"Are you family?" one of the paramedics questions.

"Not technically," Skye says. "Im his girlfriend."

"Im sorry maam, only immediate family can ride along." Skye only nods, still too much in shock to say much of anything.

"Cmon, Skye," Kristina says kindly. "Well drive you there." Skye nods, a fresh round of sobs echoing from deep within her. Alexis puts her arm around Skyes shoulders and leads her to the car. Sitting down, Skye puts her head in her hands. Only 48 hours ago, Jax had saved her life. And now his life was threatened.

"Please drive faster," Skye pleads with Kristina. "We have to be there for him, I have to be there for him." As soon as Kristina pulls into a parking spot at the hospital, Skye leaps out and runs for the emergency room entrance. Breathless, Skye screeches to a stop in front of the desk.

"Ms. Quartermaine, what happened?" a nurse asks, indicating the deep cut running along Skyes arm.

"It doesnt matter, " she says, to upset to even feel the pain. "Where is Jax?" The nurse smiles kindly at her.

"He just arrived, Ms. Quartermaine. Theyre evaluating him down the hall. Well let you know as soon as we get any information. But, in the meantime, you need some stictches for that cut." Skye sighs, too filled with worry to argue. As the nurse leads her down the hall, she shoots a pleading glance at Alexis and Kristina.

"Come get me if you hear anything," she manages to say.

"Of course we will," Alexis says.

"There we go, Ms. Quartermaine," the doctor says. "Youll be fine."

"But what about Jax?" Skye screams, panic once again rising in her voice. When she receives no answer from the doctor, Skye jumps down from the examining table and runs back down the hall. Alexis and Kristina are still sitting, waiting for news. Skye sinks into a chair beside them and buries her head in her hands. When she finally picks them up, her hands have streaks of mascara running down them from her tears.

"Ms. Quartermaine?" a doctor interrupts. Skye darts her head up, half afraid to hear what the doctor has to say.

"Is he ok?" she chokes out.

"He will be," the doctor says. "He has some broken ribs and lot of bruising. His arms is broken from the impact of where the truck hit him. Hes in surgery right now, but Ill come get you the moment hes out. I truly expect him to make a full recovery." Skye collapses back against the plastic chair, relief flooding over her at the doctors words. Tears of relief spring to her eyes.

"Thank you," she says to the doctor in a barely audible voice.

"Youre quite welcome. Ill be sure to let you know when you can see him." Skye leans back against the chair, picturing the scene that had happened only two hours before. That truck had come out of nowere. And it had been heading straight for them. Closing her eyes, Skye pictures the scene. Suddenly her eyes fly open.

"Wait a minute," she cries out. "That was a one way street. That truck was going the wrong way!" Alexis and Kristina look at her, alarmed.

"Are you sure?" Alexis asks.

"Im positive," Skye says. "Either that guy was totally drunk or the accident was no accident at all."
