Chapter 17

Lifeline

Walking back out into the living room, Skyes smile only grows. Who would have thought she would end up here? Certainly not her. When she had left the Quartermaine mansion only 36 hours before, she had never expected to end up in Jaxs suite. In fact, her intentions had been to get as far away from Port Charles as she possibly could. She shook her head, amazed at the difference such a short amount of time could actually make. Snapping herself out of her thoughts, Skye pokes her head into the bedroom to see if Jax is still there. Scanning her eyes quickly across the room, she cant help but blush as she walks over to pick up her robe from the floor. For a second, Skye flashes back to the previous night, completely unaware of the smile growing on her face. It had possibly been the best night of her entire life. She sighed with content and anticipation, breaking herself out of her daydream, and returned to the living room, still looking for Jax. Finally finding him in the kitchen, Skye quietly sneaks up behind him and wraps her arms around his waist.

"I REALLY dont want to go that meeting," she says softly, her cheek resting against the soft material of his blue shirt. Fighting the urge to whirl around and kiss her, Jax smiles.

"I dont want you to, either," he says. "Sure I cant convince you to stay here with me all day? I can make it worth your while," he says jokingly. As Skyes gentle laughter fills the small kitchen, Jax cant help but shiver. He is amazed that just the simple sound of her laughter is enough to do that to him.

"Im sure you could," she says thoughtfully. "And believe me, theres nothing Id rather do. But if ELQ goes down the tubes, it would all be your fault," she teases lightly.

"Who cares?" Jax shoots back. "Let it be my fault. Im selfish." Skyes eyes glimmer as she walks around and gives him a light kiss on his cheek.

"So am I," she says, "but I do have a business to run. You wouldnt want to keep me from that, now would you?"

"No," Jax answers, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "I know you love it and I would never take that away from you. Id never take anything away from you Skye. You know that, right?" Skye nods softly. She DOES know that. Even though it is such a foreign feeling to her, she knows that he means it and the thought makes her feel incredibly safe. Pulling away, Skye smiles up at him.

"The meeting should only be a couple of hours," she says. "Do you really want me to come back here when its done?" She needs to be sure that he feels the same way she does.

"Of course," he says. "I wouldnt have it any other way. And now, Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine," he says, switching to an exaggerated tone of voice, "I shall prepare your breakfast." Skye laughs again.

"You mean to tell me you dont just use room service?" she questions. Jax grins.

"You mean you dont think Im a good cook?"
"Dont know, Ive never tasted it," she shoots back.

"You will soon enough," he says, giving her a quick hug before walking over to the oven. Raising her eyebrows slightly and grinning, Skye looks at him, almost afraid to believe that everything happening was actually real. It felt like a dream. She sits down at the table as Jax prepares breakfast. Her eyes widen as he brings the food over on a tray.

"Youre breakfast, madam," he says in a phony French accent, placing the tray before her. Skye laughs at his imitation and looks down at the arrangement before her.

"That looks delicious," she says, looking at the Belgian waffles, sprinkled lightly with sugar, and fresh fruit. "But," she says slyly, "the question is, does it taste as good as it looks?" She smirks up at him.

"You tell me," he counters, crossing his arms and waiting expectantly as Skye takes a bite.

"Ok, ok, I give in, you ARE a good cook," she says, taking another bite. "This waffle is delicious!"

"Told ya so," he boasts. She just smiles and continues eating.

"What?" she demands as she notices Jax looking at her with a grin on his face. Still smiling, he reaches over and gently wipes the thin coating of sugar off her lips with his thumb. Smirking at her, Jax leans down gently to kiss her. After he stands back up, Skye groans. "Do that again before I have to leave, will you?" she asks.

"Of course," Jax answers, pulling her up and into his arms before once again kissing her deeply. When the finally pull away, Skye heads for the living room and grabs her coat.

"Ill be back soon," she says, kissing him lightly.

"Im counting on it," he says. Shutting the door behind her, Skye walks out into the hallway. Going downstairs and getting into her car, which Jax had had fixed, she cant help but smile. Getting into the car, she turns on the radio.

Can't you see?
There's a feeling that's come over me
Close my eyes
You're the only one that leaves me completely breathless
No need to wonder why
Sometimes a gift like this you can't deny

(*Chorus)
'Cause I wanted to fly, so you gave me your wings
And time held its breath so I could see, yeah
And you set me free

There's a will
There's a way
Sometimes words just can't explain
This is real
I'm afraid
I guess this time there's just no hiding, fighting
You make me restless
You're in my heart
The only light that shines there in the dark

(*Chorus)

When I was alone
You came around
When I was down
You pulled me through
And there's nothing that I wouldn't do for you

(*Chorus)

Skye is amazed at how perfectly the song fits her and Jax. As she drives off to her meeting, she cant help but be thrilled and anticipates eagerly what the rest of the day will bring.
