Chapter 13

Lifeline

Jax raises his eyebrows, shuts the book, and looks up at Skye. He cant help but smile at her. Even though her eyes are almost half closed out of sheer exhaustion, the mischievious spark still remains.

"What now?" he says, echoing her words. "Now its time for you to get some sleep." Now Skye raises her eyebrows.

"Didnt I just get through telling you that nobody tells me what to do?" she says, a hint of playfullness in her serious tone. Jax cant help but chuckle. This was exactly what he was so attracted to in Skye. She knew how to take care of herself and she didnt need to depend on anyone, including him. He hadnt met many people who could completely shut off everyone else and fend for themselves. Although he knew Skye did it as a defense mechanism and that she actually wanted to let someone in, he still found it very admirable; it drew him even closer to her.

"Yes, you did," he answers back. "And now Im telling you that while I respect that, I want you to get better as fast as possible. And to get better, you must listen to what the doctor said." Skye sighs, looking back at Jax. He was so eager to help, so eager to take care of her. This was something different, something she was not used to at all. And, as much as she hated to admit it, it kind of felt good. She couldnt ignore the jittery, fluttery feeling in her chest that she got whenever she was with Jax. Stifling a yawn with her hand, she looks over at Jax.

"You really are something else," she says, shaking her head slightly from disbelief.

"So are you," he says in a voice barely above a whisper. Jax gets up from his chair and pulls the comforter down on the bed. Skye just smiles and crawls in. Tingles shoot down her arms as Jax lightly tucks the comforter around her slender body. He leans down and gives her a gentle, sweet kiss on her lips. As he pulls away, he cant help but notice that Skyes cheeks ae flushed a deep pink.

"What a tease," she says in a raspy voice. Jax looks down at her, desperately trying to hide the yearning in his eyes. He wanted to be with her so badly, but he knew he had to take things slowly with Skye. She had been hurt too many times to trust him right now, and he completely understood that. But, at the same time, he wanted her to fully trust him. And he knew the way to gain that trust and break down her shield was to take things slowly and let her do what felt comfortable and right for her.

"I know what you mean," Jax says, winking at her before turning to pull down the shades on the big glass windows. Skye takes a deep breath, doing her best to supress the passion threatening to overtake both her body and mind. Jax walks over to the light switch by the door and flicks it off. Just as he opens his mouth to say goodnight, Skyes voice stops him.

"Where are you going?" she says in a voice barely above a whisper.

"I was going to sleep on the sofa," he says.

"Can you stay in here?" Skye asks quietly, fingering the frayed edge of the blanket. Jaxs heartbeat quickens slightly as he nods.

"If you want me to," he answers. Walking back over, he sits down in the oversized chair.

"Thanks," Skye murmurs softly, closing her eyes. As she drifts off to sleep, all she can see in her mind is Jax, sitting beside her in the chair. Meanwhile, Jax is having trouble falling asleep. Quietly standing, he picks up the chair and moves it over to the side of the bed. For awhile, he just sits and watches Skye as she sleeps peacefully. She has a serene look on her face, and once again Jax finds himself thinking that she looks like an angel. An angel sent down to change my life, he thinks, surprising even himself with that thought. He cant help but watch Skye as she sleeps, her hands folded lightly together and her breathing light. Leaning forward slightly, he runs his fingers over her hair, which is spread out beside her on the pillow. Squirming slightly at his touch, a sleepy smile spreads across Skyes face. Opening her eyes ever so slowly, she smiles up at him, before closing them again.

As Jax sits and watches Skye, he cant help but feel that everything is working out right. There is just something so completely right about Skye sleeping in his bed. For a long time, Jax just sits and watches Skye sleep. Just as his eyes are closing, he is jolted awake from a shrill shriek. He darts his head up and looks at Skye, who is no longer sleeping peacefully, but rather shrieking with fright.
