Skye stifles a yawn as she looks at the clock, which now reads 11:18. Shaking her head, she realizes that yesterday at this time she had been unconscious. The impact of what Jax had done for her comes rushing back, but she does her best to push it away. Even though she is happier than ever, she refuses to keep dwelling on things that will make her fall in love with Jax even more than she already is.
"Ok," Jax says, gathering up the cards from the game they had been playing. "I think you should get some sleep. You look exhausted."
"Oh, and since when do I take orders from you?" Skye asks playfully.
"Since now," Jax counters, standing up and walking over to the dresser to put away the cards.
"Nope, youre wrong," Skye cheerfully argues. "Nobody tells me what to do, not even a White Knight." Jax laughs at Skyes nickname for him, even though he has to admit to himself that shes right.
"Well then, let me recommend that you go to sleep," Jax says, slightly raising an eyebrow at her.
"I think I may just take that recommendation, but not because you said so," Skye says. "Only because Im tired," she clarifies. Jax shakes his head, laughing to himself. Skye slowly swings her legs over the bed and makes a move to stand up, careful to keep the pressure off her sprained ankle. She stands up too quickly and dizziness sweeps over her. "Whoa," she says, darting out a hand to grab onto the nighttable. Jax rushes across the room to grab her before she falls. Taking her into his arms, he sits her gently back down on the bed.
"Are you ok?" he asks, concerned. Skye closes her eyes, sweeping the dizziness away temporarily.
"Yeah, Im fine," she says in a trembling voice. "The concussion is just making me a little dizzy." She opens her eyes and stands up, more slowly this time.
"Where exactly do you think youre going?" Jax questions.
"To the guestroom," Skye explains. "This IS your room, after all, and you have to get some sleep too." Jax chuckles lightly.
"I never got that room set up," he says. "You can just stay in here." Skye eyes him, a somewhat nervous look appearing on her face. Jax cant help but laugh. "Ill sleep in the chair," he says, indicating a large armchair by the window. Or, if it makes you more comfortable, I can sleep on the sofa in the other room." Skye eyes him, a mischievious grin crossing her face.
"What makes you think Id want you to sleep on the sofa?" she asks, trying desperately to hide both her yearning and her fear. Jax raises his eyebrows at her, a slow grin spreading across his face.
"Whatever you want Skye," he says. Skye grins.
"Where did you leave my suitcases?" she asks.
"Theyre in the guest room," he answers. Skye smiles and walks slowly towards the door.
"Ill be back soon," she says, wincing as she steps down too hard on her ankle. She walks slowly towards the guestroom, trying to collect her thoughts. Why are you doing this to yourself? she questions silently. Why are you letting him get into your heart? Why are you letting youself fall in love with him? Skye shakes her head slowly, silently commanding her head to shut up and her heart to take over. Because, deep down something just felt right about what she was doing. Something in her heart told her she was doing the right thing, even though she was more frightened than she had ever been. Skye glances up towards the ceiling, a silent scream of frustration echoing through her head. As she opens her suitcase and pulls out a nightgown, she cant help but feel as though fate had caused her to get hurt last night just so Jax could save her. It was almost as if it was her destiny to be where she was. She shakes her head, trying to clear her mind. Quickly changing into the long black nightgown and robe, she folds her clothes and zips the suitcase. Heading back for Jaxs rooms, her heart flutters.
"That was quick," Jax says as Skye comes back into the room. She notices he has changed and is now sitting in the chair with a book.
"Whatcha reading?" she asks lightly.
"A book about sailing," he says. Skye nods, glancing at the glossy pictures of boats and yachts in the book. Sitting down on the edge of the bed, she cant help but stare at Jax. "What?" he demands.
"Nothing," she says, waving a hand through the air. "I was just thinking about everything we talked about earlier. I know this sounds stupid, but it really does feel like that hole is shrinking.
"It doesnt sound stupid in the least," Jax says, noticing how beautiful she looks. "I know youre scared Skye, because I am too, but we have to do our best not to let that fear get in the way." Skye nods ever so slightly, knowing that Jax is right. Taking a deep breath, she looks at him, her heart threatening to melt just from the sight.
"What now?" she asks.
