Grimacing under the weight of Skyes three huge suitcases, Jax stumbles out of the elevator towards his room. He couldnt imagine what she could possibly have in there. Unlocking the door, he drags the suitcases in and sets them down in the living room. Unbuttoning his long coat, he walks into his bedroom to check on Skye. Opening his mouth slightly to ask if shes ok, he promptly shuts it upon entering the room. Skye is sound asleep in his bed, the blanket pulled up under her chin. For a moment, he just stands and watches her, smiling, noting how peaceful she looks. Walking over quietly, he gently lifts the mug from her tea and carries it out with him into the kitchen. Gently running it under hot water, he shakes his head. The conversation he had had with Skye earlier is still running through his head. Staring out the small window above the sink, he absentmindedly continues washing.
"Ouch," he mumbles as the water becomes hotter and lightly burns his finger. He shakes his head. "Why am I getting like this?" Even though he wont admit it to himself, he knows the answer quite clearly. Putting the mug into the dishwasher, Jax promises himself to stop thinking about Skye. As the late afternoon sun shines in through the window, Jax sits at the table. He knows he has to stop this, but he just cant. For some strange reason that he cant figure out, the image of Skye laying in his bed keeps running through his mind. He shakes his head and stands up, walking into the living room. Pulling out some folders, he sits down at the table to get some work done. After awhile, he decides to go check on Skye. By this time, shes awake.
"Hey there, sleepyhead," he says, walking into the room. "How are you feeling?" Skye blinks slowly.
"My head still hurts," she admits, shifting slightly to the side. Jax just looks at her. He cant get over how normal it feels to have her laying there in his bed. "What?" she asks, peering up at him. He shakes his head quickly.
"Nothing," he says. "Ill go get you your medicine." With that, he quickly hurries out of the room. Skye sits up slightly, arranging the pillows behind her. Tucking the blue blanket around her waist, she cant help but smile, noticing that it matches Jaxs eyes. Jax walks back in, carrying a tall glass of water and two small pills. Skye holds out her hands, taking the glass in her left hand and the pills in her right. She cant be sure, but she thinks Jax deliberately brushed his hand against her palm this time. She shakes it off, thinking she had to have been wrong. Quickly swallowing the pills, she gulps down some water and sets the glass on the nighttable.
"Thanks," she says quietly, keeping her eyes down so as not to look at Jax. Her heartbeat quickens a little as he sits on the bottom of the bed. "Why are you doing this to yourself?" she thinks. "Youre making everything too hard. Just dont open your heart. You never have before and this is NOT the time to start." She lifts her head up, looking over at Jax. "You really didnt have to do this," she says, indicating the fact that shes staying in his apartment. Jax sighs and smiles at her.
"You worry too much," he says. "I wanted to do it." Skye smiles softly and turns her head. "Youre doing it again," she wants to scream. "Youre making me fall in love with you when I dont want to." Jax stands up and walks over to his dresser. Opening a drawer, he takes out a pack of cards. "You look bored," he says to Skye. She smiles.
"Im ok," she says. "The nap was just what I needed." Jax nods.
"I TOLD you that you needed to rest," he says. Skye smiles, not wanting to give in and admit he was right. Tossing the box aside, Jax sits down cross-legged on the bed across from Skye. "Any particular game you want to play?" he asks her.
"Whatever you want," she says. He nods and shuffles the cards.
"Ever play war?" he asks her. She nods.
"Betcha I can win," she says. His eyes twinkle.
"Well see about that, Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine," he says, shuffling the cards and dealing them out. For awhile, the two play in silence. All of a sudden, Skyes delighted laughter fills the room.
"Gotcha," she says, grabbing the pile of cars. The silence returns as that single word echos in their heads. Even though Jax knows she meant that she was winning, he couldnt help but think there was a hidden meaning to what she had said. And what was more, he realized now, he WANTED her to have him. He didnt want to want this, but he just couldnt help it. Meanwhile, Skye couldnt help but feel as though she had said a million things with just that one word. She blinks, focusing on the cards in front of her. "Told you I could win," she boasts. Jax just laughs.
"Are you hungry?" he asks, desperately trying to find a way to leave the room. He knows that if he stays any longer, his feelings are going to take over his brain and he just cannot let that happen again.
"A little," Skye admits. "But you dont have to get me anything. I can do it myself."
"No," Jax says firmly. "Youre not moving from that bed." With that, he stands up and walks toward the door. "Ill be back soon," he says. Walking towards the kitchen, he takes a deep breath, glad to have averted a situation in which he would have given in to his feelings. Once in the kitchen, he prepares a quick and light dinner for the two of them. Carrying it back towards the bedroom on a large tray, he feels a slight flutter in his stomach. He knows its because of Skye. Skye smiles brightly as Jax walks back in, trying desperately to ignore the jittery feeling that came over her whenever they were together. This time, however, it seemed to be much worse, almost as though she was anticipating that something was going to happen.
"That looks delicious," she says, looking down at the steaming bowl of chicken soup and lightly buttered bread. He hands her the tray and she sits up fully, leaning against the headboard. She lifts up the spoon as Jax sits down on the bed. As she blows lightly on the spoon to dissipate the steam, her breath carries and lands on Jaxs cheek. His skin tingles as he looks over at her. Her cheeks are flushed a bright red. She quickly sips the soup in an attempt to lighten the situation. Her eyes widen. "This is wonderful, Jax," she says.
"Im glad you like it," he says, staring at her for a minute. He cant help but wonder what shes thinking. Meanwhile, Skye is deep in thought. Shes having trouble keeping her heart and emotions in check, but she vows to try her best. She just cant open her heart. She cant deal with the pain. As she looks at Jax sitting next to her, she cant help but wonder though, if there WOULD be any pain this time.
