Chapter 4

Lifeline

Jax stares out the window of Skyes hotel room. It is early morning and Skye is still asleep. Glancing at the clock on the wall, which reads 7:34 am, Jax stands up quietly and walks slowly towards the door. Opening it gently, he slips out of the room and down the long hallway.

Meanwhile, Skye stirs slightly after hearing the door shut. Opening her eyes, she squints in the early morning sunlight. She blinks slowly, trying to remember where she is and what happened. The pounding pain in her head quickly reminds her. She groans and shuts her eyes again. Her head hurts too badly to sleep and her sprained ankle is bothering her as well. She tries to block out the pain, but she just cant. Not only the physical pain, but the emotional pain as well, is bearing down on her like a huge weight. She opens her eyes just a crack as she hears the door open.

"Youre still here?" she asks Jax softly, wincing from the pain in her head.

"I TOLD you I was staying with you and I meant it," he says. He walks over and sits gently on the edge of her bed. "Here," he says, handing her a box. Skye tries to sit up, but gets dizzy.

"Whoa," she says, reaching for Jaxs arm.

"Whats the matter?" he asks quickly, grabbing her small body. He sees the fright in her eyes and gently lays her back against the pillows. She close her eyes and takes a deep breath. Opening them slowly, she blinks.

"Im okay, I just got dizzy," she says. He looks at her with concern.

"Maybe I should go get a doctor," he says. She places a shaky hand on his arm.

"Im ok," she repeats. "Now hand over that box." He chuckles softly, pushing away the guilt nagging at him, the guilt that is telling him he could have prevented all this. Skye opens the lid, her fingers slightly trembling. Her laughter fills the small hospital room as she lifts the lid and peers inside.

"I thought you may be hungry," Jax says innocently. "The food here isnt exactly the best." Skye giggles and lifts out the assorted foods. Picking out a small donut, she quickly takes a bite and smile gratefully at Jax.

"Thank you!" she exclaims. He smiles at her.

"Youre quite welcome," he says, happy to have made her happy. Grabbing the tv remote from the nighttable, Jax flicks it on. Skyes eyes follow Jaxs every move and then she turns them upwards to the television. She giggles at the cheesy talk show thats on. For awhile, Jax and Skye watch, the only sounds the tv and their quiet laughing. Theyre interrupted by the doctor.

"Good Morning, Ms. Quartermaine," he says. "How are you feeling today?" Skye smiles at him.

"Ive been better," she admits. After checking her over, the doctor glances at Jax, then back at Skye.

"I think you can go home today," he tells. "But you need to stay in bed and get plenty of rest." Skye nods and smiles at the doctor.

"I will," she assures him. The doctor nods and leaves, telling them the paperwork will be at the front desk. Skye sits up slowly, so as not to get dizzy again. Jax grips her arm tightly as she stands up and gets out of bed.

"Be careful," he warns her.

"Ill be ok," she says. He looks at her, concerned.

"Ok," he says. She slowly gets dressed and then Jax takes her hand. She looks at him, surprised.

"Im really ok," she says. "Im just a little light-headed." Jax firmly keeps his hand around hers and leads her down the hall to the desk. After signing the paperwork, Jax slowly leads Skye out of the hospital to his car. She slides in slowly and leans her head back against the seat. Jax slides in next to her.

"Are you sure youre ok?" he asks. "Maybe you should stay here for the rest of the day."

"Im ok, I promise," she assures him. "Just take me home." Then a dark shadow comes over her face as she remembers what had happened the previous day. Jaxs heart breaks for her as he sees the sadness all over her face. On impulse, he reaches over and gives her arm a light squeeze.

"Why dont you come stay with me?" he asks. Skye tries to hide her surprise and then winces as a sharp pain shoots through her head. He nods. Skye shakes her head and lets out a little cry from the pain.

"Im alright," she says.

"No youre not," he replies. "And youre staying with me. End of story." He refuses to admit to himself that he would want her to stay even if she was perfectly fine. He glances sideways at her as he starts the car, noting how fragile she looks. She closes her eyes against the pain and leans back as Jax drives. As much as she refuses to admit it, shes glad Jax offered. At this point, she really feels too helpless to have it any other way.
