Jax screeches the car to a stop outside of Shantop Hospital. He was going to take her to GH, but this hospital was closer and he knew she needed help fast. Pulling open the door, he takes Skyes limp body in his arms and runs towards the emergency room entrance. Rushing through the glass doors, Jax hurries over to the main desk.
"May I help you?" a young nurse asks. Jax nods, panicked.
"This woman needs help quickly," he says, indicating Skye in his arms.
"Can you tell me what happened?" the nurse asks. Jax shakes his head helplessly.
"I found her lying on the ground along the highway," he says, fear pulsing through him. The nurse nods and gestures to an orderly, who comes running with a stretcher. Jax gently lays Skye onto it and watches, helpless, as she is wheeled away. He stares after her, terribly afraid. He hates feeling helpless. At the moment, all he wants is to protect her. Hes jerked out of his thoughts by the nurse in front of him, who hands him some paperwork to fill out. He fills it out quickly and then spends the next hour pacing the emergency room. Glancing up at the clock, which now reads 1:25 am, Jax stifles a yawn and resumes pacing. Staring quickly up at the ceiling, Jax prays with all his heart that Skye is ok. If only hed gone to look for her sooner, if only he hadnt stopped to call her house, if only...
"Mr. Jacks?" the nurse asks. Jax whirls around. "You can go in to see her now. Shes going to be alright." Relief rushes through Jax to the point where he himself goes limp. He follows the nurse through the hall down to Skyes room. His heart breaks when he sees her lying on a bed, hooked up to several machines. She looks so weak, so fragile. Hes never seen her like this before and it hurts him terribly. Her eyelashes flutter as she senses Jax in the room. She slowly opens her eyes.
"Jax?" she asks softly. "Wh-where am I? What happened? Is this a dream or something?" His heart melting, he slowly walks over and sits on the edge of the bed, just staring at her.
"Im not sure, Skye. I had this strange feeling that someone was in trouble and then, all of a sudden, I just KNEW it was you. And so I was driving along, looking, and I saw you lying at the side of the road." Skye looks confused as she tries to remember. She shakes her lightly as some of it comes back to her. Jax winces as he sees the pain in her eyes. At that moment, he wants nothing more than to take that pain away. Lowering her eyes, Skye starts to speak.
"Edward had a heart attack this morning and Alan and I got into a huge fight about it. Alan kicked me out and I just left and started driving. I had nowhere else to go. I ended up with a flat tire and I had forgotten to replace my spare. I didnt know what to do, so I just started walking. It was really cold and kind of foggy." Skye winces, remembering what had happened. "A deer ran out into the highway, out of nowhere. A car swerved to get around it, but ended up swerving off the road towards me. I lept backwards out of the way, but I tripped over this huge rock and fell. Everything went black and thats the last thing I remember." Jaxs heart breaks for her. He could see how hurt she was, physically and emotionally. He gently reaches over and takes her hand in his. Suddenly the door swings open and a doctor walks in.
"Are you with Ms. Chandler-Quartermaine?" he asks Jax. Without even stopping to think, Jax nods his head. "Ok, well Ms. Quartermaine is suffering from severe frostbite. She appears to have been out in the cold for an extended amount of time. Plus, she has a mild concussion from her fall and a slightly sprained ankle. Were going to keep her here overnight just to monitor her condition." Jax nods.
"Is it ok if I stay here overnight?" he asks without stopping to think. The doctor nods.
"As long as she gets her rest," he cautions. Jax nods seriously as the doctor walks over to Skye to check her blood pressure. Jax feels like crying as he watches. He had never seen Skye like this before, so fragile, helpless, and vulnerable. And the worst part was, he couldnt do anything to stop it. The nagging thought that he could have prevented it had he left to look for her sooner kept creeping into his mind. After the doctor leaves, Skye smiles weakly towards Jax.
"You dont have to stay," she says softly. "Ill be alright." He shakes his head firmly, turning to look at her pale face.
"Im not going anywhere," he says firmly. Skye nods softly, too weak and tired at the moment to argue about it. She gently leans back into the pillows and closes her eyes. Jax holds her hand in his, gently rubbing his index finger along her palm. Her breathing becomes heavier as the medicine sets in. She smiles sleepily at him.
"Jax?" she asks.
"What?" he says softly.
"Thanks for staying with me." He only nods softly and watches her.
