Chapter 1

Lifeline

Throwing open her large closet door, Skye almost shrieks in a combination of frustration, irritation, anger, and, although she wont let herself admit it, sadness. She cant believe Alan actually kicked her out. She was still in a state of shock from the argument. Shaking her head slightly, she grabs a couple dresses off their hangers and tosses them into the large open suitcase on her bed. Quickly removing the remainder of the clothes from her closet and dresser, she absentmindedly folds them and places them in suitcases. She blinks quickly, refusing to allow the tears that are blurring her vision to slip down her face. Zipping up her three large suitcases, she storms towards the door. Glancing quickly back at the room, shaking her head ever so lightly with a mixture of disappointment and anger, she quickly leaves and storms downstairs.

Reginald looks at her as she storms past him, wondering what has her so upset. She ignores the look and heads for the front door. She had to be out of there before the rest of the family got home from visiting Edward in the hospital. At the moment, all she wants is to get as far away from the Quartermaine mansion as possible, as far away from all the hurt and sadness as she possibly can. Slamming the door shut behind her, she storms toward her car. Pulling open the door with such force that it almost hits her, she hurls her suitcases in the back and slams the door. Sitting down in the drivers seat, she quickly starts the car and pulls out of the driveway. Its not until she reaches the end of the street that she realizes she really has no idea where to go. Pulling over to the side of the road, she considers her choices. She REALLY doesnt want to go to the Port Charles Hotel. AJ will be there and she doesnt want to tell him what happened, not yet. Plus, Jax is staying at the hotel and she cant let him see her like this. She cant ever let him see that she can be hurt, that she can be affected by what others do. No, she thinks to herself. He has to think Im tough.

Sighing, she pulls back out into the road, not really sure where she is going. She just drives and drives, for what seems an eternity. Soon the sun begins to set. Skye drives on and on, turning off the main road and onto a small, quiet one. Her heart pounds as her car bounces strangely. Puzzled, she pulls over to the side of the road and gets out.

"Oh great," she mutters, noticing the flat tire. "Just my luck." She snaps open her purse and reaches for her cell phone. Shes sure there has to be an auto repair shop somewhere nearby. "ARGH," she groans when the phone turns on. Instead of taking her to her phone book, it simply flashes no reception repeatedly. Skyes heart beats faster as she opens the trunk and realizes she had already used her spare tire a couple months ago. She had MEANT to replace it, but had never gotten around to it. Darting her eyes to the dark sky above, Skye begins to get nervous. "What am I going to do?" she says out loud as she gets back in the car and locks the doors. Its the middle of winter and a particuarly frigid day in Port Charles. She knows she cant just sit in her car and wait for someone to come by. Shed freeze to death first. Then again, she also doesnt think it would be wise to start off looking for help at this hour.

Buttoning up her long coat and twisting her scarf closer around her neck, Skye is overcome by fear. Thinking back to a recent conversation she had with Rae, Skye laughs sarcastically. She had told Rae she wanted to arrange to have a flat tire in front of Jaxs house. The old saying "be careful what you wish for" floated around in her head. She shook her head. If only Jax WAS here. "But hes not," she reminds herself out loud. "You have to get through this one by yourself." She shakes her head at the irony of that statement. Shed always managed to get through life by herself. She never really needed someone to lean on, someone to offer assistance. And just when she thought she did need that, that she had finally found that, her world was turned around when Alan asked her to leave. Skye quickly shakes her head, focusing on her current situation. She knows she has to do something. If she sits in her car all night, shell be frozen. On impulse, she grabs her purse and gloves and gets out of the car. Slamming the door angrily, she pulls her long black coat tighter around her and puts her hands in her pockets. Setting off towards the main road, Skye quickly prays that she is making the right choice.

An hour later, Skye knows she made the wrong one. She must have made a wrong turn somewhere along the way and is hopelessly lost. Glancing at her watch, she sees it is 9:30. The chilly winter wind blows across the open area, sending chills down Skyes spine. Her hands are becoming numb inside her warm leather gloves and her cheeks are so cold they burn when she touches them. "Do not let yourself cry," she commands herself over and over again. She cant help it though, and her vision blurs. Angrily swiping her tears away, Skye takes a shaky breath. The traffic on the main road is becoming lighter as everyone heads home for the night. Just that thought is enough to make the tears fall again. "I dont HAVE a home," Skye says softly. She shakes her head, worry and fright filling her body. "What am I going to DO?" she screams into the cold night air.
